pulled us through the crowd. The half-blood had sharp eyes and sharper elbows and had no problem in his pursuit. We moved onto a side street and Rio stopped, backing against a wall.
This was a familiar sensation: stalking the dragon-kin.
I peered around the half-blood to see that Levent had stopped and was looking around. Rio and I ducked around the corner of a building and listened until his footsteps retreated before we returned to the chase.
We could have just jumped out and greeted the kin at this point, but there was a silent agreement between the half-blood and I that just spying was far more fun. Plus, then we could find out what Levent was up to without him hiding it.
We walked among row houses now, still very Delfaethan but not quite as nicely kept up as the main streets. The kin slowed down, examining each house carefully.
It was all very reminiscent of that night outside Readimina, but I doubted there was a shrine or temple open for raiding in the middle of Lahnfabon. I remember that the kin had indicated interest in the Spires, but how he planned on getting there from here was still a mystery. There had to be a way.
Just as I began to think that the kin was genuinely lost, I saw him do a double take on one of the buildings and stop. The two of us ducked behind a wall again, and when I heard nothing from Levent after a minute or so, I peered around the corner.
He was gone. I frowned, ashamed of myself of expecting anything less.
“He’s gone, but be careful. He probably realized by now that we followed him,” I whispered to the half-blood. The red head nodded.
“I agree. Let’s go.”
We quietly made our way to where the kin had been standing. The building that Levent looked at seemed no different from the ones beside it. As we stood there, I noticed a strange whirring sound drifting from the back of the house.
I glanced at Rio and carefully stepped down onto a narrow dirt path between the buildings. He followed closely behind. We emerged into an alley, the backs of the houses all facing inward.
I turned to see if I could find the source of the strange noise but ended up finding Levent instead.
“Ack!” I said, instinctively stepping backward. I ran into Rio.
