The Faun

Introduction

Fauns hail from the Northern Continent, and have a relatively small population despite being one of the "immortal" races (immortal is a misnomer - fauns, dragon-kin and mer just have unusually long lives compared to humans).

Appearance

Fauns tend to have a pale complexion, and freckles are common. Hair colors range from dark brown to blonde (black is very unusual). Eye color is usually brown, hazel, or green.

Fauns have distinctive, deer-like ears at the top of their heads. Their legs are jointed like a deer's also, and the fur that covers them is reminiscent of a goat's. Their cloven hooves are sensitive to overly damp or dry climates, and must be looked after with care.

Until adulthood is reached at age 30, ears and legs may have white spots or mottled patterns. Male fauns cannot grow facial hair until after their coming of age ceremony. Likewise, female fauns are forbidden to grow their hair past their shoulders until they are formally adults.

Magic

Fauns are said to have power over plant life, but the root of a faun's magic lies in the ability to actually move and alter life energy. They can use this ability to heal wounds, but it is a much harder magic to master. Healing takes much more energy than plant magic, and if done incorrectly can kill the healer.

Culture

Fauns are of a tribe-based culture. Each member of the tribe has a job, whether it is hunter, gatherer, healer, or priestess. For a millenium, the holy bird Sangnya was brought to the birth of each faun and its song predicted what role the child would take. Due to the death of Sangnya within the last century, however, a child's role is now determined by the tribe elders when he or she reaches their twenties.

Chieftains of Lynfaelor are paternal descendants of the first fauns, but this is not a requirement to lead other tribes.

No matter the location or piety of the faun, the race acknowledges that its existence is credit to Readimina. Lynfaelor is the center of Readiminan worship, and welcomes no outsiders.
