I heard the other dragon-kin advancing toward me and I decided to do something very silly. I let the muscles in my legs go limp and as I fell to the floor I heard his weapon whistle several feet over my head. I clearly heard the wielder curse roughly as I reached out a leg and kicked my assailant in the shin.
There was another curse, and I scrambled away as the club came down, cracking just inches from my hip. I rolled toward the door as Kewyn grabbed a box off of the floor and smashed the first dragon-kin in the head with it. He fell to the ground as I regained my hoofing. I felt the blind grab of the kin behind me, but his fingers brushed my shoulder and nothing more. Kewyn slashed her sword across his face, and I could hear the blood in his voice as he screamed. I dared not look back.
“Come on,” Kewyn said, grabbing me under the arm and pushing me out the door. She paused at the doorway, crouching to inspect Rio’s head. Her fingers came away specked with blood and I heard the half-blood gurgle something incoherent.
My ears twitched as I heard another soldier clanking toward us. Kewyn cursed, slinging Rio’s arm across her shoulders as she picked him up, just able to support his weight. The soldier charged at us through the fog and I heard something whistle past my ear. Rio’s dagger hit the approaching kin square in the forehead and bounced off. I blinked. The pommel hit instead of the blade. The dragon-kin fell face-first as the dagger clattered to the ground.
I glanced back at Kewyn, who still had her arm outstretched from throwing the knife.
“Close enough,” she said. “Grab that, will you?”
She hobbled forward with Rio as I bent down to retrieve the knife. I glanced at the unconscious soldier, watching the red welt that was forming on his forehead. He was lucky.
I tucked the dagger in my belt as I ran to catch up with Kewyn. Despite having Rio, she was still pretty fast. The fog began to thin a little as we climbed the stairs back toward the ship.
“Levent,” Kewyn said, out of breath.
“Right,” I said. “Get to the ship, I’ll be right there.”
I charged down the hallway where I saw Jazibe take Levent. I could not see her getting the drop on him like the soldiers had gotten on us, but I was still worried. It was going to be a lot harder to carry him to the ship if we had to.
