“Follow us,” the dark-haired one muttered before trudging down a tunnel to our left. I turned to watch Jazibe and Levent as they exited through yet another passage, and I could not stop the little growl that was growing in my throat.
“Even if she does all this,” I muttered so only Rio and Kewyn could hear. “There's still something about her that is just... contemptible.”
We walked down a few short flights of stairs, falling a little behind the two soldiers who led us toward the storage room. Rio and Kewyn flanked me, hands still ready to grab their weapons.
“Oh, I don't know what you're talking about,” Rio said, voice slick with sarcasm. “She's welcomed us so heartily, you know.”
“You're just mad she wouldn't even look at you,” Kewyn pointed out to Rio. “Though I don't blame her. You were essentially introducing yourself to her breasts.”
“I assure you I have no idea what you're talking about,” the half-blood insisted loudly over the end of Kewyn's sentence.
I shushed him as the soldiers ahead of us stopped at a doorway, glaring at us. Kewyn said nothing to them, just nodding as she led the way into the room. I looked around, frowning a little at the enormous amount of boxes that were stacked on every wall. Kewyn shuffled through a few boxes before opening one. There was nothing but jarred fruit inside.
“I don’t think this is the right store room,” she said as she turned around.
Something whistled through the air and hit Rio on the head. He dropped like a stone.
“What are you doing?” Kewyn shouted, pulling me further into the storage room and taking out her sword. The dragon-kin soldiers stepped over Rio’s unconscious body and marched toward us, maces ready to smash our heads in. One was already stained with blood.
“Rio,” I moaned, heart racing as the dragon-kin backed us into a corner. I had nothing to fight with: my walking stick was gone and my dagger was on the ship. It was up to Kewyn and her sword.
She charged forward with a yell, swinging her sword at the first dragon-kin’s legs. He managed to catch the blade with his mace, but it was apparent he had not been expecting such a low blow. Kewyn followed up by giving him a swift kick in the stomach.
